He was born in 1947 in the city of Kongju in Ch'oongnam Province. The descendant of a bankrupted Yangban (traditional Korean nobility class), his household migrated to Seoul upon their sudden ill fate. After peforming part-time jobs for 3 years and graduating from a Kyungi Province High School, he navigated through the Seoul University Economics Department and received his doctorate in economics at America's Princeton University. He served as a professor of Economics at Columbia University and Seoul University before being appointed to Chancellor of Seoul University in 2002. The books he has authored includes "Theory of Central Banking," "Macroeconomic Theory," "The Principles of Economics" (co-authored) and "The Korean Economy Was Still Far Off"
