System would transfer real-time data from battlefield to command

South Korea has launched a military surveillance and communications system based on the most up-to-date technology, the Defense Ministry said.

The system, dubbed C41 and developed in South Korea, is designed to maximize combat power by connecting the networks of command, communications, and intelligence. It has been introduced into use so far by the 5th Army Corps, which safeguards northeastern Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that in real combat situations, the system will help the military pinpoint the location of enemies and enhance combat power by providing analyzed intelligence to commanders through their laptop computers or large-screen display monitors at command posts.

"By being able to share real-time battlefield information, we can expect enhanced combat power and an advantage in intelligence-gathering," a ministry official said.

The ministry expects that the system would translate into 800 billion to 1.2 trillion won (800 million to 1.2 billion USD) in cost reductions, garner 92.1 billion won in production profits, and create 5,500 jobs.
