South Korea will develop military robots by 2010 to help reconnaissance efforts and remove land mines, Army officials said Wednesday.

"We will form a joint research team with the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) to develop the robots in three phases over the next four years," an Army official said, asking to remain anonymous. The robots will then be deployed at infantry and anti-terrorism units.

Under the plan, the team will develop three types of robots: robots for land mine detection and clearing; reconnaissance robots; and robots to support combat.

"The ADD, which is studying 30 core technologies related to military robots, will mainly handle the project, and industrial robot technology will also be applied," the official said.
