The investigation into the deaths of two newborn babies, whose bodies were found in the freezer of a French citizen living in Seoul, entered a new phase Sunday with police putting together a list of several women believed to include the mother.
Police said they found three to four women believed to have intimate contacts with the Frenchman, the father of the babies, after checking the man's phone and credit card bills and interviewing his neighbors.
One of the women, including a South Korean, is highly likely to be the mother, they said.
Police are currently trying to confirm whether one of them gave birth to the babies.
The Frenchman, 40, found the bodies in a refrigerator in his apartment, located in an area of southern Seoul that is popular among French businessmen and diplomats, and called the police late last month.
He had temporarily returned alone from a month-long family vacation in France to attend a business meeting.
With the help of DNA tests, the police found the man was the father of the babies, but only after he flew back to France to rejoin his family.
The man, whose identity was withheld by police, has denied the test results and is refusing to return to Seoul.
Investigators sent DNA samples from the women and the Frenchman's wife to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation for DNA testing, in an effort to determine if one of them is the mother.
Police did not rule out the possibility of the wife's involvement in the case but were leaning toward the chance that the mother was in an inappropriate relationship with the Frenchman.
