Heavy snow blanketed South Korea on Sunday, disrupting some air flights and highway traffic in many areas, weather and police officials said.

In one traffic accident, a man was killed and 16 others injured when a tour bus carrying 25 people overturned after crashing into the median strip at a highway near the country's central city of Daejeon, they said.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said up to 25 centimeters of snow fell between late Saturday and early Sunday.

Seoul reported 12.4 centimeters of snow, as many other parts of the country were under heavy snow warnings.

Up to 20 domestic flights connecting Seoul with the southern resort island of Jeju were cancelled, according to the Seoul Regional Aviation Administration.

"Flights to Jeju are to be suspended for a while due to strong winds on the island," an official at the administration said.

Outbound International flights leaving Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul were also delayed by up to an hour. Airport officials said, however, that all air traffic was expected to be normalized later in the day.

Several highways, especially in mountainous regions, were closed for safety reasons. Cars on some highways running along the western part of the country were forced to slow down, moving at a speed of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.
