Joint industrial complex to receive 17 S.K.-made items bearing U.S. technology

The U.S. Commerce Department has issued a license for a South Korean technology firm to export several items to the joint Korean industrial complex located in the North Korean city of Kaesong (Gaeseong). One of the items is a device used in radio frequency identification technology.

On December 21, the Ministry of Unification said a Korean company, S1, has received approval from the U.S. government to export 17 items, including networking equipment and personal computers, to the industrial park run by the two Koreas.

This is the third time the U.S. has approved the export of items to the Kaesong Industrial Complex since November last year. The U.S. has requested that the export of any product made up of more than 10 percent of U.S. parts or technology be first approved by Washington’s commercial regulatory body. The radio frequency identification technology falls under this category, so the S1 company submitted its export plans for approval.

The unification ministry said it will install the radio frequency identification technology at the industrial complex during the first half of next year. It will be used in a system aimed at shortening customs inspection for South Korean goods headed for Kaesong, the ministry said.
