Wearing paper bags labeled with the ‘M’ golden arches over their heads to disguise their identities, part-time workers at McDonald’s demonstrated outside the company’s headquarters in the Jongno District of Seoul on Nov. 12. Holding signs that read, “What’s the point of negotiating if we’re going to be laid off?” and “Guarantee the employment status of part time workers,” the employees showed their displeasure for current bargaining conditions. Lee Ga-hyun, the chairman of the part-time workers union, said, “Regardless of whether we are able to bargain collectively, there is always anxiety because the employment contract ends before negotiations are finished. This puts workers at a disadvantage.” (by Lee Ji-hye, staff reporter)
