One month after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Pohang, many of the residents who lost their homes are still living in the Honghae Indoor Gymnasium in the Buk District of the city. 221 tents are set up in the first and second floors of the gym, with space heaters and thick mats on the tent floors helping to keep people warm during the cold winter. However, there have been complaints from those living in the gym about a lack of hot water and the speed of efforts to find more permanent housing solutions. Jang Suk-kyung, the head of the Social Welfare Department in the Pohang City government responded by saying, “We are trying to find long-term residential facilities for half of the victims by the end of the year, while also utilizing volunteer groups to repair houses that were damaged by the earthquake.”
