A statue of Marilyn Monroe that commemorates the actress’ 1954 visit to US military base in Inje, Gangwon Province was officially dedicated on Dec. 21. The statue, which cost 55 million won (US$51,700) shows the famous pose of Monroe’s skirt blowing up from a passing subway car in the film, “The Seven Year Itch.” Hwang Pyung-woo, the director of the Korean Cultural Heritage Policy Research Institute, criticized the placement of the statue by saying, “The standards of the people who decided to establish a statue here are truly appalling”
