President Moon Jae-in attended a showing of the film, “1987: When the Day Comes” which depicts the year when South Korea transitioned from a military dictatorship to a democracy. The film covers the period beginning with the death of student activist Park Jong-chul in January, to the massive street protests in June which forced then-president Chun Doo-hwan to agree to hold democratic elections. Moon himself played a key role in the protests as a human rights lawyer in the city of Busan, alongside former president Roh Moo-hyun, whom he later served as chief-of-staff. Following the screening, Moon spoke to the audience members, saying, “During the June struggle, democracy fighters were plagued with the question of whether the world would change…I believe this move is the answer to that question. When we muster up our power, when Yeon-hee participates [in the protest], the world will change,” he said, speaking of the film’s female heroine He added that “it was the Candlelight Revolution that completed the spirit of the June struggle.” (Blue House Photo Pool)
