A 100 meter street commemorating democratic activist Park Jong-chul opened in the Gwanak District near Seoul National University in an area with many student boarding houses. The street features a mural and commemorative plaque with information about Park’s life. The former SNU university student died in police custody after being tortured in Jan. 1987. Park’s death, which is depicted in the film, “1987: When the Day Comes,” was one of the catalysts for the June Struggle which resulted in the emergence of democratic government in South Korea.
