The civic group “Citizens Commemorative Action Committee for the Impeachment of Park Geun-hye” held a demonstration on the steps of the Sejong Center for Performing Arts near Gwanghwanmun Square in the center of Seoul on Mar. 9. The event took place on the one-year anniversary of the Constitutional Court’s verdict to uphold the National Assembly’s decision to impeach the former president.
The group held the rally to call on the government to address the six major issues facing South Korean society that the group identified in Dec. 2016 as needing to be reformed: identifying truth of the Sewol ferry sinking and the death of farmer Baek Nam-gi, who was critically injured during a Nov. 2015 candlelight protest; suspending deployment of the THAAD missile defense system; abolishing the state-mandated history textbooks that were created during the Park Geun-hye administration; suspending the amendment of the Labor Law; and immediately passing a law to prohibit consolidation of media outlets.
