The Yonsei University chapter of the KCTU public transportation workers’ western branch announced on Mar. 14 that cleaning workers and the university had reached an agreement regarding hiring of new workers. The labor dispute began when cleaning workers took over the main building of the university of Jan. 16 to protest the administration’s refusal to hire new staff to replace 31 workers who had retired in 2017. The university had instead planned to hire part-time student workers to fill the positions. After 57 days, the two sides reached an agreement after the university promised to hire 10 regular workers. “During negotiations, we were demanding that the university replace all of the retired workers, but we ended up compromising,” said Choi Da-hye, deputy director for the KCTU’s western branch.
