The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs held an emergency briefing on Mar. 27 to announce that a case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) had been confirmed at a pig farm in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province. It marks the first time that a case of the FMD A-type virus had been detected in South Korea.
Officials have announced that they will be limiting the movement of all livestock nationwide for 48 hours, and have culled 917 pigs within 3 km of the affected farm. The case is the first reported incident since Feb. 2017, when several cases were reported among cows in Boeun, North Chungcheong Province.
