President Moon Jae-in apologized and offered words of comfort for the victims and family members of those killed during the Apr. 3 Jeju Uprising while attending a ceremony to mark the event in the Apr. 3 Peace Park in Jeju City. Moon became the first president to attend a commemorative event since the establishment of a memorial day in 2014. “We can no longer postpone establishing the truth or restoring the reputations of the victims,” Moon told the audience.
“As president, I offer my deep condolences and words of thanks to the living victims, their families, and the citizens of Jeju who have suffered the full grief and pain of the Apr. 3 Jeju Uprising. Together with the citizens of Jeju, we will remember and be forever conscious of the pain caused by this incident. I deeply apologize for all of the pain caused by the violence of the state” he continued, while promising to fully resolve the outstanding issues related to the uprising.
