President Moon Jae-in offered flowers and burned incense at the Apr. 19 National Cemetery in the Gangbuk district of Seoul on the 58th anniversary of the April Revolution. The revolution was a popular uprising which overthrew the Rhee Syng-man regime in 1960, and ushered in South Korea’s first democratic government. The government, headed by Prime Minister Chang Myon, lasted less than a year, as Park Chung-hee took power in a coup d'état in May 1961.
In signing the guestbook, President Moon wrote, “Through the spirit of the Apr. 19 Revolution, I will make a fair and just nation.” The president also met with family members of those killed in the uprising, as well as about 20 representatives and advisors who were part of the parliamentary government that was elected following Rhee’s removal from office.
