[Photo] Workhouse authorities apologize to deceased inmate’s family

The family of an inmate who died of heart failure two days after entering a workhouse because he was unable a 1.5 million won (US$1350) fine for theft received an apology from the facility’s staff on Apr. 24. The family of 55-year-old Mr. Kim, who died with only 14,100 won (US$13) to his name, had demanded the apology before conducting the funeral. “Yesterday we received an apology from the workhouse, and now we have decided to go ahead with funeral,” said Kim Kyung-ho, the victim’s younger brother. Kim’s funeral was held on Apr. 26 at 12:30pm. His story was the subject of a Hankyoreh article on Apr. 21, four days after his death. (by Shin Min-jung, staff reporter)
