Ex-president Chun Doo-hwan was indicted on May 3 on charges of defaming the victims and surviving families of the May 18 Democratic Movement of 1980, 23 years after his last indictment. The May 18 Democratic Movement, also known as the Gwangju Uprising, was a grassroots movement protesting the military regime of then president Chun Doo-hwan. Chun sent in troops to suppress the movement, which resulted in brutal civilian casualties. In his three-volume memoir published last year, Chun claimed that witnesses who testified to the shooting of civilians by a military helicopter were fraudulent, even going so far as to deny that the shootings ever happened.
