Mount Gariwang was once the lush home of a forest of trees aged over 500 years. However, much of the forest was demolished to construct alpine ski courses for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The construction of the Alpensia and Yongpyong ski resorts stirred up much controversy, particularly among environmentalists and conservationists who were concerned the resort would become a single-use facility. Former Canadian gold medalist Jean-Luc Brassard even commented that the athletes want to compete, not “destroy nature.” The above photo depicts the slopes of Mount Gariwang in the aftermath of the Olympics. Melting snow and running water have led experts to predict a landslide.
