The May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement was a mass protest against the then military government of Chun Doo-hwan that occurred between May 18 to 27, 1980. The movement was brutally suppressed by the military, and although there are no confirmed numbers regarding the death toll, official figures put it around 200 deaths and at least 1,000 injuries. The movement began on May 18 when some 600 students gathered in front of Chonnam National University, in Gwangju, the capital of Korea’s South Jeolla Province, to protest the suppression of academic freedom. Government forces moved and began beating the students, who were eventually joined by several thousands of civilian protesters. The above photos show a video of previously unreleased footage regarding the incident being shown publicly for the first time on May 9 at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province.
