Despite the rainy weather, protesters gathered in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul on May 16 to protest the Japanese government’s attitude toward South Korean victims of sexual slavery during imperial Japan’s occupation of Korea. Euphemistically referred to by Japanese soldiers as the “comfort women,” many of the victims were taken from their homes and forced to serve as sexual slaves to Japanese military. The gathering shown in the above photo was the 1335th of such protests that express the South Korean public’s dismay at Japan’s refusal to offer a proper apology and adequate reparations. The protests take place every Wednesday in front of the Japanese embassy.
