Women gather in Gwanghwamun Plaza on May 28, Menstrual Hygiene Day, to rally for safe female hygienic products. Declaring that access to safe female hygienic products is a basic human right, members of the civic group Action Network for Safe Female Hygienic Products and Women’s Health hold up signs labeled with some of the harmful chemical and toxins that go into current tampons and menstrual pads, including benzene and methylene chloride. Menstrual Hygiene Day was launched by German-based NGO WASH United in 2014 to promote awareness for sanitary and healthy menstrual hygiene.
