South Korea’s first drag queen parade was held on May 26 in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood. A celebration of sexual minorities and queer culture, the drag parade was a historic moment in a country that is often labeled as intolerant of the LGBT community. Although gay pride parades have been held before, they are usually accompanied by anti-gay counter-parades, usually from religious right groups. The drag parade on May 26, however, saw no such counter-demonstration. May have cited the drag parade as evidence that tolerance for sexual minorities is increasing among South Korean youth.
