Electric scooter operators have been involved in an increasing number of traffic accidents. Operators often don’t distinguish between roads and walkways, fail to abide by standard traffic rules, and their sudden movements and turns make them difficult to spot to the average automobile driver. The number of accidents involving electric scooters jumped from two in 2014 to 22 in 2015. Recent accidents have even resulted in the deaths of scooter operator.
