Developments for a mine-clearing (“obstacle removal”) tank are entering the final phase. Hyundai Rotem announced on July 9 that the mine removal it has been developing has been “cleared for combat” by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). The vehicle’s most obvious application would be mine removal in the DMZ, where an estimated 860,000 mines remain buried. Hyundai Rotem indicated that mass production of the vehicle will likely begin around 2020, after various bureaucratic hurdles have been cleared.
