Temperatures in Seoul on Aug. 1 rose as high as 41 degrees Celsius, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. The mountainous Gangwon Province, usually known for its cooler climate, even recorded a high 40.6 degrees. This makes Aug. 1, 2018, the hottest day to go on record in Korea. Modern meteorological observations began in Korea in 1907. The heat has inflicted significant damage to agriculture and food production, resulting in the loss of 3.23 million ducks and chickens and hundreds of fish. (Park Jong-shik, staff photographer)
