Workers unjustly laid off by SsangYong Motor nine years ago and members of the Labor Committee of the Jogye Order of Buddhism protested the corporation’s refusal to reinstate the workers by holding a “march of bows” through Seoul’s downtown area on Aug. 2. The march of bows stretched 1.5km, from Seoul’s Jogye temple to the memorial site for Kim Ju-jung, one of the workers who has since passed away. Throughout the entire march, participants performed a bow usually reserved for Buddhist rituals and stood up before proceeding a few steps forward and bowing again—all amid record temperatures in Seoul’s current heat wave.
