In the current heat wave overwhelming Seoul, elderly citizens who don’t have air conditioners in their homes or can’t afford the additional electricity costs of operating air conditioners or electric fans have fled to public facilities to escape the heat. The Nowon District Office in northern Seoul has set up tents in eight of its lecture halls to provide a refuge from the heat for senior citizens in lower income brackets. Aside from such facilities, senior citizens have been flocking to subways, public buildings, and anywhere else that has air conditioning.
