Funded by the Japanese government, the Reconciliation and Healing Foundation was established in 2016 under South Korea’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to resolve the comfort women issue. The foundation was formed as part of an agreement between the Park Geun-hye administration and the Japanese government to officially settle the two countries’ disputes over the practice of military sexual slavery during the Japanese occupation. However, many within South Korea’s activist community consider the deal shamefully inadequate. The above photo shows civic demonstrators in Seoul on Aug. 6 calling for the disbandment of the Reconciliation and Healing Foundation.
