Since being constructed in 1988, the Singok submerged weir gates along the lower reaches of the Han River will be opened up to increase river flow. The weir gates were constructed in accordance with the 1988 Seoul Olympics but have since been linked to massive ecological damage, disrupted water flows, and algae blooms known as the “green tide.” Observers are keeping watch to see if the controversial weir gates will undergo demolition following their opening.
