The heat wave has worsened the green tide crisis for Korea’s rivers. Warnings for tidal currents have been issued for the Geum River and authorities are on alert for the upper Han River. Conditions for the Nakdong River are still severe. Environmental organizations have criticized the government for taking a lackadaisical approach to the crisis. The above photos show a fishway along the Nakdong River, which can only perform their function when water levels are five meters above sea level. The image on the right shows the fishway after it rained on Aug. 15, filled with the infamous algae bloom. The bottom image shows Daecheong Lake, which has become so green from southward tidal currents that it’s earned the nickname “algae-bloom latte.”
