This is what a warning sign reads along a general outpost (GOP) patrol route at the DMZ. The warning is about anti-personnel mines—blunt but accurate. During the Korean War and the following Cold War period, more than one million anti-personnel mines were installed throughout the DMZ and along its barbed-wire fences that delineate the Civilian Control Line and the Southern Limit Line. The Ministry of National Defense has yet to disclose the number of mines estimated to be within the DMZ. The above photos show a detonator for a M16 anti-personnel mine as well as a deactivated M14 mine, also known as the “ankle mine.” (photos provided by Green Korea)
