A population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins is thriving off the coastal waters of Jeju Island near the city of Seoguipo. In 2013, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries recognized the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin as an endangered species requiring protective measures, and declared it illegal to capture them. With the help of governmental and conservational efforts, groups of dolphins began to be spotted regularly off Seoguipo’s coast in 2012, and it seems the dolphins have made these waters their permanent home since 2016. The above photos show a group of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins swimming off the coast of Seoguipo on Sept. 26 at sunset. (provided by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries)
