The remains of 64 South Korean MIA/POW from the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War (1950-53) were repatriated by the US to South Korea via Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam (JBPHH). The remains arrived on South Korean soil on Sept. 30. A ceremony to receive the remains was presided over by South Korean President Moon Jae-in at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province on Oct. 1. The remains were uncovered in North Korea during a North Korea-US joint excavation project that lasted from 1996 to 2005. They were delivered to the US along with the remains of US soldiers in August. When American scientists discovered the remains of South Korean soldiers, US authorities immediately began procedures to have them repatriated to Seoul.
