Compiled data from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea and Ministry of National Defense reveal that at least 17 women were subjected to sexual assault by martial law forces during the May 18 Gwangju Uprising of 1980. At least two of the victims were subjected to gang rape by soldiers. The victims included teenage students and women in their 20s who were unaffiliated with the democratization movement. The photo shows a group of “May Women” who took to the streets in protest of the military dictatorship of then president Chun Doo-hwan. (provided by Cha Myeong-suk, who was one of the demonstrators)
