The controversial Peace Dam, which has been widely lambasted as a public scam, began in 1987 and was completed in 2005. Construction of the dam began under the administration of Chun Doo-hwan, who justified the dam by claiming that it would block a flood created by North Korea by detonating its own dam on the Kumgang River. Gangwon Province and Hwacheon County have since launched a project to convert the dam into a “peace waterway” that is supposed to increase tourism to the area. The dam has also been adorned by a painting which gives the viewer the illusion of seeing through to the other side, effectively resurrecting the trick dam into trick art. At 93m tall and 60m wide, the painting is now registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest work of trick eye art. (provided by K Water)
