White-naped cranes are migrating to Cherwon County, Gangwon Province, for the winter in increasing numbers. Preservation efforts are credited for the increase in migration. Over 4,000 cranes are expected to inhabit the plains of Cherwon this winter. Although they typically migrate to South Korea from Japan during the winter, if conditions here continue to improve they may stay permanently. It is worth nothing that deteriorating environmental conditions in South Korea once led to the massive exodus of cranes. (provided by the Korean Association of Wild Birds Protection)
