Civic demonstrators gathered in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Plaza on the evening Dec. 13 to mourn the death of Kim Yong-gyun, a subcontract worker at Taean Power Plant who died after getting caught in machinery while working the nightshift alone on Dec. 11. Kim’s death has shed further light on irregular workers under subcontractors who often suffer dismal labor conditions. Calling upon the Moon administration to take action on regulations and working conditions for irregular workers, demonstrators were seen holding placards that read, “How many more have to die?” (Kim Myoungjin, staff photographer)
