A group of 100 civic demonstrators representing South Korea’s community of irregular workers gathered in Seoul on Dec. 18 to demand a government resolution from the Moon administration to the issue of labor abuses of workers under subcontractors. Demonstrators focused on the recent death of Kim Yong-gyun, a 24-year-old irregular worker who died in a machinery accident at Taean Power Plant while working the nightshift alone. The photo shows the demonstrators behind a line of instant cup noodles, which were Kim’s main form of sustenance during his shifts, as he rarely had time for a proper meal. The demonstrators announced their plan to organized a massive candlelit march from Seoul’s Ministry of Employment and Labor to the Blue House on Dec. 21. (Park Jong-shik, staff photographer)
