The remains of the late Kim Sa-bok, who was the inspiration for the protagonist of the South Korean film “A Taxi Driver,” which depicted the ruthless massacre of civilians during the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement of 1980, will be lain to rest in the memorial park for German journalist Jurgen Hinzpeter. With Kim’s help, Hinzpeter became the first foreign journalist to convey the horrific events of the May 18 Gwangju Massacre to the outside world. Hinzpeter was also buried in the memorial park at his own request in 2016. Kim’s remains will be transferred from Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, to Gwangju. The photograph shows Kim and Hinzpeter in 1980. (provided by the Saram Film Festival)
