A massive catch of Alaska pollock, numbering around 19,176, from the waters off Goseong County, Gangwon Province, has been determined to be from the wild. While fishery authorities originally thought the fish were part of the millions of captive-bred population of Alaska pollock released from hatcheries over recent years, genetic tests have confirmed that the recent catch comprises fish born in nature. This leaves the question of what happened to the hatchery fish, which were released as part of a project to revitalize the ecosystem of South Korea’s coastal waters, leading some to question the success of the hatchery release project touted by the government.
