Daeseong-dong Elementary School, in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, is the only school located within the region known as the DMZ. On Jan. 11, the school held its 50th graduation ceremony. Daeseong-dong is the only civilian habitation in the South Korean side of the DMZ. It was formed in 1953 as part of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which stipulated that each side would create a town inhabited by civilians on their respective side of the DMZ. Students are mostly transported to and from school on buses and teachers much travel to and from work via officially ordained vehicles. The photos show students celebrating their graduation in hanbok wear along with teachers, Daeseong-dong residents, South Korean and UN troops serving in the Joint Security Area. (photo pool)
