Suwon District Court has ruled that the South Korean government and Cheonghaejin Marine shipping company are to pay 80 million won (US$71,398) in reparations to each of the survivors of the sinking of the Sewol ferry on Apr. 16, 2014. The Jan. 14 ruling resulted from a reparations lawsuit submitted by the 20 Sewol survivors and their family members. In addition to reparations for the survivors, the South Korean government and Cheonghaejin Marine have been ordered to pay smaller sums to the survivors’ family members and spouses.
