In September 2016, Choi Eun-ju’s daughter experienced an acute stomach ache and developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a condition characterized by red blood cell destruction and kidney failure, shortly after eating a McDonald’s happy meal in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. Convinced that the condition was caused by contaminated undercooked meat, she joined parents whose children suffered similar symptoms in a lawsuit against McDonald’s Korea in July 2017. It was discovered in November 2018 that McDonald’s Korea was aware of the possibility of contaminated meat in June 2016, but failed to take proper measures. Furthermore, it was revealed that an executive ordered an employee to report to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety that the contaminated meat had been disposed of. The photo shows Choi and other parents demonstrating in front of the Seoul Central District Court on July 5, 2017.
