Archbishop Kim Hee-joong, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea (CBCK), has officially apologized on behalf of the Catholic Church for not adequately supporting the Mar. 1 Independence Movement and the Korean Provisional Government during the Japanese colonial occupation. “The Catholic Church of Korea looks back on its negligence and abandonment of the pain of our people and its inability to look unflinchingly at that historical period,” said Kim during a statement on Feb. 20. This was the first instance of the Korean Catholic Church giving an official apology regarding its stance during the colonial occupation.
