An investigation committee under the Ministry of Environment for the Four Major Rivers Project has proposed measures for dealing with the harmful environmental effects caused by the project under the Lee Myung-bak administration. The committee has suggested dismantling the project’s weirs along the Geumgang River and to keep the river’s weir sluice gates open at all times. The committee will submit its proposal to K Water on Mar. 7 after a series of discussions and debates. The committee based its conclusions on scientific investigations and research, confirming the common-sense notion that water should always be in a state of flowing.
The photo shows a Sejong weir along the Geumgang River in May 2018, showing improved water conditions six months after the weirs were opened.
