On Feb. 22, South Korean National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang spoke out in a press release against Liberty Korea Party (LKP) members who have defamed victims of the Gwangju Democratization Movement by claiming the movement was orchestrated by North Korean agents and special forces. Referring to an email sent by US citizens Martha Huntley and Barbara Peterson, who witnessed the slaughter of innocent civilians by martial law forces during the movement in May 1980, Moon vowed to do his best to ensure that distortion of historical facts will not be unpunished. Moon added that he’s received letters from family members of American missionaries who witnessed the Gwangju Democratization Movement to take legal measures to punish those who distort the historical facts behind the brutality of martial law forces.
