The number of South Korean newborns in 2018 revealed a decrease of 6.2% percent from the previous. The number of newborns has diminished by over 10,000 over the past four years. This has convinced government officials of the necessity of a special inter-departmental task force assigned with research and policy measures for increasing the country’s birth rate. According to Statistics Korea, 401,900 babies were born in South Korea in 2015, but this number plummeted to 302,300 for 2018, indicating a rapidly aging society.
