Kim Seung-hyo, a Korean-Japanese who was the victim of fabricated spy charges under the Park Chung-hee dictatorship in 1974. He suffered torture until he “confessed” to being a spy, after which he was sentenced to 12 years for violating national security laws. The Seoul High Court declared Kim innocent in August 2018, 43 years after his wrongful arrest and imprisonment. Kim’s life story was the subject of the documentary film “Spy Nation” (2016). The Seoul High Court ruled on Apr. 5 that Kim is to receive over US$700,848 in reparations. (screenshot from “Spy Nation”)
