The people of Gwangju took to the streets of their city on the eve of May 18 to reenact key moments of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement of 1980. The events reenacted included a gathering in front of the site of the former South Jeolla Provincial Office and a march along the city’s streets that was famously broadcasted 39 years ago. The reenactors called for an end to the distortion of historical facts by South Korean politicians, including conservatives in the Liberty Korea Party who have claimed that the movement was orchestrated by North Korean spies and special forces. Although it was raining, people flooded the streets to partake in the reenactments. (Baek So-ah, staff photographer/photo pool)
